Pre & Post-Operative Rehabilitation in West Ryde

Success of surgery will not only rely on the procedure itself, but pre & post management. Generally speaking, post-operative management will often involve management of scar tissue, flexibility, strengthening, proprioception and return to sport/work function.

Rehabilitation is always under guidance of the surgeon and NDPSC has a great relationship with a high number of surgeons meaning we are very familiar with pre-op and post-op protocols for a range of procedures.

Eastwood Physio Services for Surgical Preparation and Recovery

A successful surgery doesn’t just rely on the operation itself going smoothly. To get the most out of your treatment, and to ensure that you’re back on your feet as soon as possible, proper preparation and recovery techniques are essential. Working with a physiotherapist both in the lead-up and aftermath of an operation is one of the best ways to do this.

Pre operative is this period before a major surgery, and it can be often overlooked by patients. Ensuring that you’re properly educated about what the process is going to look like, and prepared (both physically and mentally) to handle the recovery period is absolutely vital. Getting your body strong and healthy prior to surgery will make a world of difference, and a healthcare expert will understand all you need to be doing to ensure that happens.

Post operative rehabilitation can be tough. Major surgeries can leave you out of action for some time, and pushing yourself to get stronger and manage pain is no easy feat. Rehab during this period typically involves the management of scar tissue, flexibility, strengthening, proprioception, and helping you to return to work and sport in full functionality.

Common Types of Operations That Benefit From Physio Rehab

There is a wide variety of different surgeries and operations that commonly lead people to start physio rehab for recovery. If you’ve undergone a major surgery, chances are that there will be a long-term effect on your body, and getting back to functional health may take some time. In scenarios like these, post surgery rehab is the best way to go – ensuring your recovery is guided by a healthcare expert. Here are some common procedures our patients have been through prior to starting rehab:

  • Bone, joint and muscle surgeries (including repairs, reconstructions, and replacements)
  • Spinal surgery (including spinal fusions and disc repairs)
  • Brain surgery
  • Surgery for internal organs ( such as the lungs, heart, and liver)
  • Bladder and prostate surgery
  • Hysterectomy
  • Gynaecological repairs and reconstructions

Your Physio Rehab Questions Answered

How many sessions will I need?

The amount of sessions involved in a rehabilitation program entirely depends on your condition of health, the type of surgery you’ve undergone, and your goals for rehab. For example, often patients who have been through a knee or hip replacement surgery might be looking at around 6 weeks of rehabilitation, with one or two sessions per week. But it’s all easy to change.

Am I locked into a set amount of sessions?

Not at all! You’re in charge of your rehabilitation, and you will book and pay on a session-to-session basis. If budgeting, time, or location mean you want fewer sessions with your physio, then you’re welcome to adjust, regardless of recommended time frames.

Do you work with my surgeon?

Yes, to an extent. Rehabilitation is always under the guidance and referral of a surgeon. At NDPE, we have close relationships with a number of great surgeons, meaning we are very familiar with their pre and post operative protocols.

Should I provide my physio with X-rays and MRIs?

It depends! Sometimes your physio may request scans to get a better idea of your pain and where it may be coming from, but often the two aren’t related. Coming in with X-rays and MRIs aren’t necessary, but may be requested at some stage by your physio.

Long Term Management

One of the biggest perks of physio rehab is that its going to be benefitting you and your body for many, many years to come. Your physio is aiming to set you up for a long, healthy life after your surgery. This includes self-management plans for pain, mobilisation, and ongoing strengthening of your body. Going through a rehab program isn’t just to help you through those initial weeks of discomfort after a major operation – this is something that’s going to provide advice and techniques that will improve your quality of living for many years to come.
